含有量＝content ではない

物質の含有量を "content" と訳すことが多い。

例えば、含水量、金属量、アルコール分などは "water content"、

"metal content"、"alcohol content"。

でも、"the content of water of the composition" というのには非常な違和感を覚える。

最近、日本人の訳した特許文書には、この表現が非常に多い。

「前記組成物中の前記xx化合物の含有量」なんて文だと、大概

the content of the xx compound in the composition

て訳してある。

でも、この場合の content は「組成物のxx化合物含有量」であって、「xx化合物の含有量」ではない。実体のない不可算名詞だ。

the composition has xx composition content of ~ であって、

the xx compound has a content of ~ とはならない。

「前記組成物中の前記xx化合物の含有量」の場合は

the amount of the compound in/of the composition

とすべきだと思う。

ある成分同士の割合をいう場合は

amount の代わりに proportion でもいいかもしれない。

でも、最近は ”the content of the xx compound” のような表現が認知されているようだ。
